Atypical depression is a subtype of depression that is usually difficult to treat. Classic cases of atypical depression are usually harder to diagnose in patients as classical depression because those suffering from the later have at least five or more symptoms that point to this type of depression. Whereas atypical depression, patients begin to suffer from depression at an early age, usually during their teen age years and do not have as many signs or symptoms as classical depression.

Some doctors feel that atypical depression is a lower level form of depression that last for at least two years or more. Some medical doctors feel that it is a milder form of bipolar disorder called cyclothymia. Sufferers from this illness have less mood swings than normal.

One of the main characteristics of atypical depression is mood reactivity. This is described as improvements in moods as long as something positive changes the situation. However it is known that people, who suffer from major atypical depression, have symptoms not improving even with positive stimuli. Doctors have found though that in diagnostic criteria can be placed on the following list of symptoms that play a direct part on the patient’s mood:

Hypersomnia

Over eating

Intense reactions or increased sensitivity to rejects which usually occurs in social and work related incidents

Over burdened feelings

Normally a doctor will take a complete medical history to determine if there are any other underlying causes of these symptoms. Blood tests for possible thyroid problems as well as hormone levels are evaluated. It is quite common for atypical depression to run side by side with other diseases which is the reason why doctors want to get a full picture of what is going on with the patient.

Depression alone is a direct result from a chemical imbalance in the brain. However, there are other factors that may also cause depression or add chemical imbalance that magnifies the symptoms. These factors consist of the following:

Family history

Change in social structure or loss/separation (death which results in grief or loss of a job)

Guilt

Abuse (sexual, emotional and/or physical)

Major life changing event (change in location, retirement, graduation, moving)

Serious illness that is possibly life threatening

Drug/alcohol abuse

Isolation or exclusion

Once diagnosed, patients are usually described antidepressants for treatment. Research has found that atypical depression responses better to monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), and also serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It does not however respond to the older more typical drug of tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs).

Because MAOIs can and have had adverse affects and associated with food interactions on patients, they are not prescribed when atypical depression is first diagnosed. People placed on the medications are warned to follow a very strict diet to avoid this problem. They are expected to limit simple carbohydrates and fat and to avoid foods and drinks that contain tyramine which acts to inhibit monoamine oxidase. This amino acid is found to neutralize the effects of tyramine in the body. Tyramine can be found in several foods. Patients are also warned to keep alcohol consumption to a minimum. Not only are there adverse affects on the medications due to foods, over the counter and some prescription drugs as well. This list is always being updated.

Depression is of two types; chronic and acute. However, there are other types too but chronic depression refers to as suffering from depression for quite a longer duration. However, short term depression (maybe termed as ‘event’ based depression) may not require any specific treatment and they get solved easily once those events are over or become old. For instance, depression due to losing a contract may come for some days or months but can be overcome once you get other contract.

Chronic depression is a result of series of unwanted episodes or events that have gone all wrong and undesired. Or, in other case, chronic depression may be the result of a big blow (such as death of beloved person or a financial loss leaving you on the road etc). In such chronic depression case, the individual has to be tackled carefully.

Chronic depression can be tackled using some antidepressants. However, modern medicines may bring some unwanted side effects and that is why, natural treatment or therapy for chronic depression is preferred wherein the treatment is likely to get continued for several months or even years. Mental counseling plays significant role in treating chronic depression. Here is where, the role of relatives, spouse, parents and friends come. Depressed person has to be kept happy and tension free. One should take care of depressed person as in many cases, they might have suicidal tendency.

Natural way to treat chronic depression includes consumption of healthy diet, adopting special exercises (on a regular basis) and intake of some potential herbal/natural supplements that are composed of potential herbal extracts having natural antidepressant actions. Herbs such as Brahmi (bacopa), Ashwagandha (Withania) are good to continue to treat chronic depression.

In this busy and haste life, weekend outing plays a significant role. Even health care providers now believe that one has to plan some short vacation periodically. There, the worries about work, tasks, assignments, projects are to be left in the office! When you are at your leisure time, you should not carry any of your gadgets such as laptops, mobiles so that your brain can take rest!

Some ancient therapies such as Panchakarma is said to have good and promising results in chronic depression. A special treatment called as Shirodhara is considered to be beneficial in calming down the brain and restore the brain chemistry. The procedure involves pouring medicated solution onto the forehead from certain height for certain duration. The herbs used here are brain soothing and calming. Also head massage (using medicated oil) is good to tackle chronic depression.

Depression does not leave anyone and irrespective of the race, breed and age, this mental annoyance is said to be one of the troublesome conditions that can ruin up individual’s day and if not treated properly, it may take a serious turn.

Depression in children, as the term suggests, is depression seen or noticed in kids. There are many reasons for this as children too, worry about what all is happening around them and they care about the way they are treated. Contrary to the popular belief, children do care about themselves and love themselves. They do have self respect and if things are against their will, they may feel tensed and get depressed. Child depression is a bit different from that of an adult depression as in this case, counseling plays a significant role in treating the case.

In fact, depression in children is considerably more significant as a health ailment. For instance, about 5 per cent of children at any given time face some form of clinical depression; this naturally happens during critical periods in a child’s development, and not only it shows itself with behavioral changes and feelings but it also makes a child dull and lack of performance at school.

Depression in children, if remains untreated, can affect academic performance and learning, social interventions and development of personal and later professional relationships, self-pride and parent-child relations etc. This all can end up in substance abuse, turbulent behaviors, violence and aggression. In some unfortunate worst cases, it can even lead to suicide. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, suicide is the third leading cause of death among children and adolescents, just a step back to accidents and violence.

The treatment for depression in children includes medications, such as mood stabilizers, anti-anxiety medicines, antidepressants, and stimulants. Also, behavioral therapy is also good for the children as it can specifically help in issues of family conflict, self-pride, mood and anger control, and fair and healthy communication.

Special education (also called as psycho-education) is all about treating child depression and its associated symptoms. The mental counseling plays a major role and there, the help of parents, teachers and neighbors is required. Depression in children is to be handled with utmost care since even bit of harshness or rude behavior of anyone may induce a major change in children and they may even take some serious step.

Children suffering from depression are to be kept happy and tension free. It is always better to know what makes them so worried. If they are worried about their education and score, make them understand that they are trying their level best and they will get good ranks. Also, if they feel lonely, they are the parents to help them out. Play with them and make children happy to prevent child depression.

Mood of an individual suffering from bipolar disorder might swing from euphoria and/or severe irritability (called as mania) to blue moods or lack of interest or pleasure (typical bipolar depression). There are two types of Bipolar Depression wherein less severe mood elevation (medically known as hypo-manic episodes) features in one type of disorder and more severe in another. However, there are emerging data that reveal that there could be further extension of the bipolar spectrum (that some health care providers refer to as unipolar depression) could be based on a broad clinical relevancy.

Bipolar I disorder features a history of at least one manic attack, with or without depressing ailments whereas the Bipolar II disorder is characterized is a combination of both; depressing symptoms and a less severe form of mania (as stated above, called hypomania). Acute episodes can differ in duration as well as intensity over the period. Early in the phase of the ailment, for instance, the period between acute episodes can last several weeks or in some unfortunate cases even years, but later such symptom-free phases are likely to come down.

There is something called Rapid Cycling is quite a frequent course variant that is defined as facing four or more episodes in a year. Clinical diagnosis to find out appropriate treatment for bipolar disorder is essentially grouped as per the condition i.e. depression, rapid cycling/combination state or simply mania state.

Simply put, bipolar disorder can be defined as the coexistence of depression and (hypo-) mania. However, in a long term this is almost always predominant by depressing factors as compared to (hypo) manic episodes. Patients suffering from bipolar disorder are at very risks of suicide, especially when they are under severe depression (called as a suicidal tendency). In addition, in bipolar patient, there are several biological disorders those require medical attention and some behavior therapies.

Bipolar disorder can be tackled with proper mental counseling, some brain calming medications, natural therapies and a positive support from relatives, friends and spouse.

Depression is a health problem that majorly involves the human brain. It may not directly affect any other body system or its organs but over the times, if it is left untreated, it may come up with several health ailments and then may involve various body systems directly.

Fortunately, there are many ways to treat depression. The medications or drugs used for such purpose are called as antidepressants. An antidepressant is a psychiatric medicine prescribed to alleviate major depression or dysthymia. The group of medicines called as MAOIs, tricyclics, and second-generation antidepressants (like SSRIs), and SNRIs (Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors) are specially linked with the term. Such medications are now preferred choice for most of the psychiatrists and other health care provider. However, their effectiveness and adverse effects is the subject of lots of researches and clinical trials.

Most of the medicines used for treating depression have a delayed onset of action and such medication is generally prescribed over the course of weeks, several months, or in some cases, even for years. Despite the name, antidepressant is often used in the curing other health ailments such as stress and anxiety, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, eating disorders, severe pain, mood swings, behavior problems and dysmenorrhea and other conditions related to hormonal imbalance. Alone or in combination of anticonvulsants (such as Tegretol), such medicines are also used treating ADHD and substance abuse by focusing on underlying depression.

Most of the antidepressants are thought to act by slowing-down the remotion of certain brain chemicals. Such chemicals are known as neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are required for normal brain functioning. Antidepressants help people with depression as they make these natural chemicals to be more bioavailable for the brain. Antidepressants may have effects on many other medications. That is why, before undergoing any such antidepressant (including over-the-counter medicines) one should contact health care provider.

Looking at modern medicines’ side effects, more and more people now prefer to undergo natural or herbal depression medication. This includes use of extracts made out of certain special herbs those possess natural antidepressant actions. Herbs such as Bacopa, Withania, Adhatoda, Centella etc have been prescribed to tackle various mental ailments including depression.

Along with internal therapy, external therapies are also helpful in tackling depression. Specially designed treatment such as Shirodhara is said to be very useful in calming down the brain and restore the brain chemistry. This special treatment is a part of Ayurvedic Panchakarma that involves pouring medicated solution onto the forehead from certain height for about half an hour.

The lack of understanding depression, just as many other illnesses is quite common. The main thing is to understand that depression goes beyond just feeling sad or “down”. It also goes beyond the inability to cope with the difficulties that life brings. Depression is far more serious, more persistent and does often affect how a person would function in everyday life.

A misconception about childhood depression is that people believe that every child enjoys a happy carefree life. Children have no control over their lives which rendering them powerless. Imagine living each day in this state. Most people will close their eyes to the fact that it is a frightening event and they know they would not be able to cope with the reality that children are faced with it each and every day. Normal adults not suffering from depression, have the opportunity to make choices that will enable us to change how we live and what we do in life. Children on the other hand do not have that choice and this constraint causes frustration sets in.

As with adult depression, there is no one cause of childhood depression. There are several factors that make children prone to depression that any Mental Health person takes into consideration when making their diagnosis. Factors such as family history of suicide or mental illness is one of the main things that is taken into consideration along with reports of abuse (physical, emotional or sexual), any illnesses that the child may have had, and finally, tragic events that the child may have experiences (death, divorce or abandonment). The list goes on.

There are also several symptoms as well. Note however that these symptoms that are listed, are not limited and again, can vary from child to child. Symptoms include constant sadness and sometimes extreme irritability often resulting in a temper tantrum, low self-esteem or the complete feeling of worthlessness, loss of interest in activities that they might have enjoyed at one time, and just as adults, change in appetite that can be seen as either weight loss or weight gain.

A child suffering from depression can also show visible signs of changes in their sleep patterns causing them to be awaken at odd hours along with the inability to fall back to sleep. They also experience insomnia, causing them to fall to sleep at all. Children often experience the inability to concentrate, extreme anger or rage, headaches and other pains in parts of the body including the stomach, lack of energy or the complete opposite – hyperactivity, and again, recurring thoughts of death or suicide.

Discuss with the child’s doctor any events in that the child may have experience that could possibly be the underlying motive of childhood depression. Children feel down especially when there is an underlying cause such as peer pressure, grades, or even a loss of a loved one. However if the feelings persists and they begin to interfere with the child’s normal daily activities, professional help is definitely needed.

You do accept challenges right! You have completed so many tasks, assignments and projects earlier than deadlines and all was just a great work! If you are so keen about your job, responsibilities, businesses and promises; why you do not try and fight depression that you might have been suffering since years. There is no human in this world who does not have had depression in one or the other period in the lifetime. Depression, stress and anxiety are three of the most common health ailments that are unavoidable. You cannot ignore the responsibilities and tasks and the moment you are allotted with some serious work, you may start thinking about it and may have sleepless nights. The depression may not harm any of your body systems directly but over the times, if remained untreated, it may eat up your brain and start bothering in whatever you do!

The depression may then involve your body systems and organs directly and one worst day, you may find it difficult to perform your routine tasks. You do not feel going out, meeting people and taking up responsibilities. You prefer to live alone, probably in dark with no connection with the world! Is it the solution? Certainly not!

You can fight depression by just taking care of your diet and lifestyle. As the luck would have it, there are many ways to knock-down depression. You can simply have some antidepressants those are enough to tackle depression up to certain extent. However, as with other modern medicines, antidepressants too have side effects that may harm the body. And, probably, that is why, more and more people now adopt alternative, natural and herbal therapies to fight depression.

Let us look at some important tips to fight depression:

Tip 1: Go for meditation. Meditation is one of the best holistic exercises that help in controlling the anger and aggression. This is also good to tackle worries, anxiety, tension and depression.

Tip 2: What you eat, you just become! Eat healthy –light diet. Spicy, junk, canned, packed and oily foods are to be avoided. Also, non-veg is to be controlled.

Tip 3: Go Herbal! Herbs such as Brahmi and Ashwagandha are very good to soothe the brain and to bring brain chemistry into normalcy. You can go for some brain soothing products available on the market. However, meet your health care provider before undergoing any such therapy.

For any woman, delivering a healthy baby is a challenging task, both physically and emotionally. It is quite obvious that many new mothers face lots of mood swings after delivery with some uncertain pattern of experiencing joy one minute and down the next. Such feelings are sometimes called as the “baby blues”, and generally go away within a week or 10 days of delivery. Nevertheless, some women might experience a deep and constant depression that may last much longer. This is medically labeled to as postpartum depression.

The existence and recognition of postpartum depression dates as back as the 4th century BC! Despite this early cognizance, the issue has not always been considered as a serious ailment. As a result, postpartum depression remains to be ignored or overlooked. It is an issue that can be effectively tackled using a wide range of modern and ancient (such as Ayurvedic) medications, therapies and lots of other techniques. Again, sooner the condition is diagnosed; better the chances of getting proper treatment. It is very essential to recognize and recognize the symptoms of postpartum depression in the mother as early as possible. This may sound difficult as the depressive feelings oftentimes include intense and irrational feeling of fear. The mother might fear that she is losing her temper or fear that people do feel that she is not a fit mother.

Typically, postpartum depression makes the mothers to feel that they are bad mothers and may not tackle their babies in a proper way. It is important to remember here, that this condition is quite a common and can be treated.

Health experts divide postpartum depression into three major categories viz; baby blues; postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis.

The baby blues simply mean that there is very mild postpartum depression. It generally begins 1 to 3 days after delivering a child and is featured by weeping, peevishness, insomnia, mood swings and a feeling of vulnerability. Such blues may last several weeks and statistics say that 50-80% of mothers face such depression. Postpartum depression is more draining than those blues. Here, the mothers experience tearfulness, insufficiency, guilt, anxiety, peevishness and tiredness. Physical features may include headache, numbness, congestion in chest and hyperventilation. Statistics say that postpartum depression ranges from 3-20% of births. Such kind of depression can begin at any period between birth of a baby till 6 months and might last long for several months or even for a year. Postpartum psychosis is comparatively quite a rare condition wherein the symptoms are severe confusion, exhausting, agitation, changes in mood, feelings of despair and shame, delusions and rapid speech or mania. Statistics say that this affects only 1 in 1000 births.

The treatment depends upon the cause, however, mental counseling stands first as the best treatment. Brain calming herbs such as Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Mandookparni, Shankhapushpi may work. Most of the modern medicines are contraindicated for breastfeeding mothers. Holistic exercises such as yoga and Pranayama have promising results.
